Bidgood to retire on Saturday

Published: Wednesday 16 September 2009

Veteran boundary umpire, Paul Bidgood, has announced that he will retire on Saturday following his record-breaking appointment to his 5th State League senior grand final, ending one of the most decorated careers of any umpire in the 57 year history of the Association.

Paul commenced umpiring in 1989 and has assembled an outstanding list of achievements, some of which include:

*  A record 288 senior games as a boundary umpire

*  A record 11 senior grand finals (5 State League, 6 SFL) by any umpire

*  Essendon v Carlton (1993)

* Tasmania v Richmond (1994)

* Tasmania v Victoria (1998)

* VFL senior matches including a senior final

Well done Paul on your outstanding career. Your achievements will take a lot of beating and we have no doubt that you will be keen to continue on in your role as President and to assist the boundary umpires where possible.

Al “Hutchins” Downie achieves 250 Old Scholar games

On Saturday 22nd August Al Downie took to the field in his 250th Old Scholars match played between Hutchins and Richmond at Queenborough Oval. Al, who is a well known umpire in this competition, received a guard of honour from the Hutchins players as he exited the field. Well done on your milestone Al. Perhaps you might now shout the bar?

Hyland hits 300

History was created at Boyer Oval on Saturday 15 August when Nigel Hyland ran onto the field to officiate in his 300th senior game (includes State League plus SFL Premier and Regional League matches) between New Norfolk and the Central Hawks. In doing so it appears that Nigel has become the first running umpire in the 57 year history of the Association to achieve this feat. This is a particularly impressive when you consider that over 200 of those senior games were achievedon the boundary in the old Tasmanian Football League when senior appointments could be very hard to come by given the strong depth in those days and the Statewide nature of the competition. What made the day even more special for Nigel was the fact he was able to umpire with his son Jason (a former VFL grand final umpire in 2001) who returned from Sydney to do the game. Well done Nigel on a fantastic achievement.

State League returns to Hobart

Published: 6 April 2009

It was great to see State League football return to Hobart on the weekend following a nine year absence after the demise of the former Statewide League.

A good crowd gathered at KGV Oval on Saturday to witness Glenorchy and Launceston clash in the opening match of the season. Last season Glenorchy were premiers in the Southern Football League while Launceston also took out the premiership in the Northern Tasmanian Football League. In fact, the match was a replay of the aborted State premiership which was unable to be played at the end of last season due to what was believed to be travelling and match payment issues.

Our team of umpires on the day were:

Field: Ben Lehner, Nick Foot, Joel Harris

Boundary: Justin Morgan, Paul Bidgood

Goal: Tim Cowen, Michael White

We understand that all umpires were very impressed with the skill level and speed of the match. Th
